Historic Home Museums in Los Angeles

Unfortunately, the Sheats-Goldstein house is a private property, so it’s not open to the public. With a unique design by American architect John Lautner, and a touch of glam by owner James Goldstein, this futuristic mansion is an iconic Hollywood landmark – and a popular hangout spot for celebs. If you enjoy exploring the historic homes of famous, and not-so-famous people, there are a number of historic residences in Southern California that are open to the public as museums.

Architect Gordon Kaufmann designed the residence and ancillary structures, and construction was completed in 1928. It was a gift from oil tycoon Edward L. Doheny to his son, Edward "Ned" Doheny Jr. and his family. Following the purchase of the estate by the City of Beverly Hills in 1965, it became a city park in 1971, and was subsequently added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 as Doheny Estate/Greystone. The house and grounds are often used as locations for film and television shows. The house's descending staircase is one of the most famous sets in Hollywood. Businessman James Goldstein has been the sole owner of the Sheats-Goldstein house since he purchased it in 1972.

Historic Doheny Greystone Estate is owned by the City of Beverly Hills and is operated through the Department of Community Services – Recreation and Parks Division. Since shutting down, Greystone has been working on renovations to the damaged space, while also taking the opportunity to make previously planned upgrades as well. According to the restaurant’s Facebook, they are aiming to reopen on May 30 with a new menu. In 2016, the Viscounts and the Frischs embarked on a journey by purchasing the old tavern property and reshaping it into the culinary haven known as Greystone Public House.

This way, his and Lautner’s legacy will continue to inspire and attract curious minds and aspiring architects and designers. His work is not limited to just the architecture of the house; Lautner also designed the interiors, the windows, lighting systems, all the furniture, the rugs, and other details. The concrete-and-wood house was built into the sandstone ledge of a hill, and it’s a testament to the connection between man and nature.

The Sheats-Goldstein house is located in the Beverly Crest neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, just up the hill from the Beverly Hills city limit. Due to its location, the house offers amazing views of the city, but is also very secluded. Exclusive parties and events are held at Club James round the clock; Rihanna celebrated her 27th birthday party here, with Jay Z, Mick Jagger, and Leo DiCaprio in attendance. James Goldstein entrusted the home, its surrounding estate, as well as a 1961 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud and his eclectic wardrobe to the museum.

The result is a house so unique, so carefully crafted and fresh, that Goldstein wants everyone to be able to tour it and be inspired by it. At the time, the house had fallen into disrepair and was in dire need of a makeover, so Goldstein reached out to Lautner to help bring the residence back to its former glory. Prior to reopening, Greystone will need to pass a food inspection and pass a Liquor Control Board inspection – this is because Greystone’s liquor license hasn’t been in use for over 90 days, due to their closure. HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) — A popular restaurant in the Harrisburg area is set to reopen this month following a December disaster that shut them down. The mansion is also a venue for the play The Manor, by Kathrine Bates, directed by Beverly Olevin, and produced by Theatre 40 of Beverly Hills, which takes place in various rooms.

For now, James Goldstein is living his best, most glamorous life up in his hillside mansion overlooking the City of Angels. It’s by far the most recognizable house featured in the movie, set up as the home of adult film producer Jackie Treehorn, which earned Jimmy Goldstein’s house the moniker of ‘the Big Lebowski house’. The James Goldstein house, besides serving as home to the elusive businessman, has also been used by various showbiz producers and directors.

The James Goldstein house was in a state of disrepair when the businessman purchased it in 1972 for $185,001. The 4,500-square-foot Sheats-Goldstein residence was designed by John Lautner (one of the most noteworthy American architects of the twentieth century) and built between 1961 and 1963, in Los Angeles’ Beverly Crest neighborhood. This 1963-built mansion is an architectural gem and one of Hollywood’s best-kept secrets. And we’re here to tell you everything there is to know about the Selling Sunset-featured property where the Oppenheim group celebrated their 10th anniversary.

We know he grew up in Milwaukee and then moved to California to attend Stanford University, after which he got into real estate and started investing heavily in developing Century City in L.A. He’s always been into fashion, constantly in the front row at glamorous fashion shows, and he even has his own fashion line. In the meantime, the residence is available for rent for photoshoots, and we’re willing to bet we’ll be seeing more of it in upcoming movies, TV shows, and music videos.

It’s located in L.A.’s Beverly Crest neighborhood and it’s a private property. The other striking property in the movie is Lebowski’s opulent mansion, which is actually another popular filming location, namely the Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills. This is where movies like The Social Network, Eraserhead, The Witches of Eastwick, The Prestige, and X-Men were filmed.

Neutra ran his architectural from the original house from 1932 until a fire destroyed most of the main building in 1963. The Research House was rebuilt with the most modern materials and design adaptations by Neutra and his son Dion in 1966. There is also a Garden House on the property that was occupied by Dion Neutra and his family. Tours of the VDL House are conducted on Saturdays by architecture students from Cal Poly Pomona. The Greystone Mansion, also known as the Doheny Mansion, is a Tudor Revival mansion on a landscaped estate with distinctive formal English gardens, located in Trousdale Estates of Beverly Hills, California, United States.

The rapper was reportedly impressed and fascinated with the architecture of the Sheats-Goldstein house, and wanted to do something similar with his $57 million new home. The house is so impressive that in 2021, Kanye West aka Ye enlisted James Goldstein to help him design and spruce up his newly purchased Malibu mansion. Various Hollywood movies and TV shows were filmed at the Sheats-Goldstein residence, including the now-iconic The Big Lebowski. Dubbed Club James, for obvious reasons, the venue was Goldstein’s idea, to keep Hollywood parties out of his house, but still close by. The house has also served as a setting for fashion ads and commercials, glamorous events, and, well, porn flicks.

He continues to spend time at the residence, but also often rents it out for photoshoots or as filming location for Hollywood movies or TV shows. In 1789, Fritchey purchased 25 acres of land on this site from Andrew Berryhill, the property’s original owner. Berryhill had received a warrant from the Quaker government for this tract of land on May 6, 1765. By 1798, Fritchey had built the two-story fieldstone house; it was not the typical 18th century home in this area.

The audience is separated during the play to watch scenes in different orders. The Manor's plot is a fictionalized account of the Doheny family, including Doheny's involvement in the Teapot Dome scandal and his son's murder. It has been performed every year at Greystone Mansion since 2002, making it Los Angeles' longest-running play. In addition to numerous events that take place there, the mansion plays host each year to Catskills West, a theater arts and drama camp run by Beverly Hills Parks and Recreation, from mid-June to early August. Fritchey Tavern was an obvious stop for traffic using the main thoroughfare, now Linglestown Road, which fronted the property. Through this venture, John and Shirley Frisch transcended their roles as business partners and became more like family for the Viscounts.
